La Bonne Mère, le Ferry Boat et l'Energie Solaire
I could not resist to add a post on the inauguration on 1 February 2010 of the new ferry boat in the seaport of Marseilles, being myself a native of the Phocean capital. The newly inaugurated boat covers the world's shortest maritime route, i.e. within the two sides of the Old Harbour (Le Vieux Port) across the Lacydon. It is powered by electric batteries (loaded at night) and photovoltaic panels (25 m²). A perfect illustration of the possible combination of sustainable urban transportation means and cultural heritage, under the good eye of Notre Dame de la Garde.
It takes over the long heritage of the César that has been operating the line since 1953, being itself a successor of a long ferry boats tradition (to be pronounced [féri boaaaate]!). The boat has been named after a popular voting: "Le Ferry Boat".
